Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

My name is Mr Roscoe and I have been teaching at St Simon’s since September 2016 as the Year 4 teacher. Also in the class we have experienced TAs and an LSA helping to ensure children get the support that they need. These are Mrs Whelan, Mrs Milner and Mrs O’Callaghan. We also currently have the great addition of Miss Whittaker who is completing her final placement towards achieving her PGCE in Primary Education.

Your children should be in for a really exciting year full of interesting topics such as the Ancient Greeks, volcanoes and the Romans. Look at the curriculum overview on this page for more details on the year ahead. This block the theme is The Empire Strikes Home, where we look in more detail at how the Roman Empire changed Great Britain. Alongside this, we will be reading one of my favourite books as a child, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will be using a mixture of writing and drama to explore the book in more detail.

PE takes place on a Tuesday and Friday. On a Tuesday, the children will continue to need their outdoor P.E kit for Athletics and they will need their Outdoor PE kit again for Rounders (On a Friday).

Children should read for 20 minutes every evening and record this in their reading records every time they read. The records will be collected in on a Tuesday and Thursday so they can be checked by a member of staff but books can be changed at any point. Maths and English homework will be handed out on a Friday and is to be returned by Wednesday 9:10am at the latest. There will be opportunities for the children to take part in topic based challenges throughout the year too and these will be given on Class Dojo.

The school uses Class Dojo as a way to promote growth mindset as well as being an opportunity for you to contact me about any query you may have. Your child will gain positive points for displaying the key skills within Growth Mindset. Please make sure you have signed up so we can share all our learning with you.
