Welcome to Year 6!
I am Miss Jones and this year will be my 5th year teaching at St Simon’s Catholic Primary school and my 2nd year in Year 6. When I am not at school I enjoy playing netball and reading. Our teaching assistant this term is Miss Michael, who has just returned from travelling around Australia! We will be joined again by Mrs Livingstone as a Learning Support Assistant who will be with us every morning.
This term is our final term at St Simon’s!
In block 4 we will be exploring one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays: Macbeth. We will be studying the characters in depth, taking on roles and using our creativity to create and perform our own version of the play.
Having looked at both North America and Mexico, we will finish off our History and Geography work this term by delving into the history of the Maya. This will include looking at artefacts, playing some Mayan games and even discovering what hot chocolate used to be like!
We will also be having a greater focus on Sex and Relationships Education this term, in preparation for the coming teenage years and going to Secondary School. If you have any questions, please see Miss Jones for a parents’ guide.
PE lessons take place on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Children will need both their indoor and outdoor PE kits. On a Monday at dinner time pupils will also have the opportunity to take part in some activities with trained sports coaches.
Please make sure PE kits are in school every Monday and only taken home on a Friday for washing, as there may be other sporting opportunities throughout the week.
In Year 6 pupils are expected to read for 20 minutes every evening. They must note in their reading records what they have read and an adult signature is required before books can be changed. Reading Records will be monitored by Miss Michael or myself at least twice a week.
Maths homework will continue to be set on MyMaths. Your child will have the same login as in previous years. Two tasks are set each week to complete. This homework will be set on a Friday and must be completed by the following Wednesday.
English homework is completed in our English homework books. Your child will be told which pages to complete each week and note these in their reading records. The books will be handed out on a Friday and must be returned to school by the following Wednesday to be collected for marking.
Spellings are given out every Monday and will be tested on the following Monday.
There will be opportunities for the children to take part in extra homework activities throughout the year and will make any notes of these in their reading records.
The school uses Class Dojo as a way to promote growth mindset as well as being an opportunity for you to contact me about any query you may have. Please make sure you have signed up so that we can share all our learning with you.
This will be your final year at St Simon’s – let’s make it the best yet!
