Reading
As a school we follow the book banding system, which consists of Oxford Reading Tree Scheme books as well as a collection of narratives from many different authors. Children are encouraged to read each book and to spend time talking about plot development, characterisation and are taught how to use inference and deduction to make predictions and to formulate a better understanding of the purpose and organisation of the text.
Teachers determine which book band level a child is working on through their professional assessment, which includes observation, discussion and also through an assessment tool named PM benchmarking. Children will progress to the next book band when their class teacher feels that they are suitably ready.
Regular Guided Reading sessions take place within the classrooms to allow children to be taught and to practise explicit skills that are necessary for them to be able to improve their reading. Children are exposed to different genres to enable them to experience different text types and for them to apply their learning further.
Please click on our year group pages at the bottom of the main screen to find out which class readers our children are working on this year.
