Black History Awareness
This week, Year 4 have been taking part in our school’s Black History celebrations, following this year’s inspiring theme of “Standing in Power and Pride.” The week began with a powerful whole-school live assembly, where the children learnt about the importance of recognising and celebrating Black History. The assembly encouraged pupils to think about what it means to stand up for what is right, to take pride in who you are, and to use your voice to help make a positive change.
In class, Year 4 explored the remarkable story of Rosa Parks, a courageous woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger — not out of anger, but from a deep sense of dignity and exhaustion due to being treated unfairly because of the colour of her skin. Through her strength and pride, she stood her ground in court, becoming a powerful symbol of the Civil Rights Movement and showing the world that change begins with one brave voice.
Inspired by Rosa’s story, the children reflected on what “standing in power and pride” means to them today. They discussed ways they can show respect, fairness and courage in their own lives — whether speaking up for others, showing kindness, or celebrating what makes each of us unique.
