Exploring place value through addition and subtraction - Maths
Week Beginning: 29/09/25
This week, our children have been developing their understanding of number by using place value charts and counters to support their work in addition and subtraction. The place value charts have allowed the children to clearly see the value of each digit in a number — the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands — and to represent these with place value counters.
By physically moving the counters on the chart, the children have been able to see how numbers are built and broken apart. For example, when adding, the children carefully place counters into the correct columns and then regroup them if necessary, by making a new ten, hundred, or thousand. When subtracting, the children use the same method, exchanging counters across columns when needed. This hands-on approach helps them to visualise and explain the steps of their calculation with confidence.
The children have particularly enjoyed working in pairs, discussing their methods and reasoning as they solve problems together. It has been wonderful to see them use mathematical language to describe what they are doing, such as, “I need to exchange my ten tens into one hundred” or “I can regroup my ones into another ten.”
