28. Week beginning 20/04/2026

This week, Year 3 combined their History knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians and their Scientific Enquiry Skills to go through the steps to mummify a tomato!

First we prepared the tomato by washing it. We then scooped out and removed the insides and placed them into a jar, as the Ancient Egyptians did with the organs. After that, we mixed salt and bicarbonate of soda together to create a special mixture, similar to the natron used in Ancient Egyptian times. The mixture was then put in and around the tomato to help dehydrate and preserve it.

We are going to closely observe the tomatoes over the next couple of weeks and compare them to another tomato which has not gone through the mummification process to see if there is a difference over time.

Some say gross, maybe even gruesome, but Year 3 say learning about Ancient Egyptian life is awesome!
