30. Week Beginning: 16/03/26
In support of British Science Week 2026, the Year 4 pupils enthusiastically participated in two child-led “wow” experiments where they worked collaboratively in small groups. The first experiment challenged the children to design and construct a raft using a single sheet of A4 paper. They then tested their creations on water to evaluate which design could support the greatest number of passengers, represented by marbles. The highest-achieving design successfully held an impressive 71 marbles.
To further extend their learning, the children demonstrated commitment and resilience in a second experiment, where they designed and constructed bird nests capable of withstanding environmental challenges. Each nest was tested against strong winds, created using a fan and heavy rainfall, simulated with water poured through a watering can sprinkler. The pupils applied their creative thinking well to ensure that their structures remained secure and protective, incorporating features such as insulating layers made from feathers, leaves, grass and shredded paper, as well as slanted roofs to deflect rain.
