Catholic Social Teaching
Catholic Social Teaching guides how we live out our faith in the world, putting the Gospel into action through love, justice, forgiveness and care for others. At St Simon’s Catholic Primary School, Catholic Social Teaching underpins our daily life and learning, helping our children understand their role as global citizens created in the image and likeness of God.
Here is an overview of the core principles of Catholic Social Teaching that we teach and practise across our school community:
- Human Dignity: Every person is created by God and possesses inherent value and dignity. We teach children to respect, value, and celebrate everyone, regardless of background or differences., promoting our STRIVE values in all that we do.
- Subsidiarity and Participation: Everyone has a right and a duty to participate in society and voice decisions that affect their lives. We encourage our pupils to use their voices, take on leadership roles (such as our Mini Vinnies, School council, Restorative Ambassadors) and contribute actively to school life.
- The Common Good: We are called to work for the good of all people, ensuring that society allows every individual to reach their full potential.
- Option for the Poor and Vulnerable: Following Jesus’ example, special attention and care must be given to those who are poorest, weakest, or most vulnerable. Through local (St Peter’s parish) and global fundraising (CAFOD), our school actively supports charities to aid those in need.
- Solidarity: We are all one human family, no matter our national, racial, ethnic, economic, or ideological differences. We stand together with our global neighbours in compassion and friendship.
- Care for God’s Creation (Stewardship): We are called to protect the planet and care for God's creation. We teach our pupils to be responsible stewards of the Earth by taking care of our local environment and learning about sustainability.
- Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers: Work is a way to participate in God's creation. Everyone deserves fair treatment, safe working conditions, and just pay.
- Peace and Reconciliation: We actively promote peace, forgiveness, and understanding in our classrooms, playground, and wider community.
Living Out Catholic Social teaching
Inspired by our school mission, "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God," and our guiding core ethos to STRIVE (grow, learn, and love in a safe, Christ-centred environment), Catholic Social Teaching principles shape both character development and social action across the curriculum. Whether through environmental stewardship, supporting local food banks, or learning about global justice, our pupils are empowered to make a positive difference in the world.
